Are you wondering what to read?
Would you like to learn more about topics such as self, others, feelings, choice, freedom, equality, ethics, justice, or just wondering what kind of resources are there to help guide you through some of the dilemmas in your life?
Unsure what to pick, but not satisfied with the suggestions Youtube or Amazon throw at you? Or, maybe you have already picked a book or resource, but just need a tiny bit of help in navigating the (academic) language, concepts and theories?
Afraid of sounding stupid in a conversation? Academic language is often needlessly complicated. It can make you feel like you don’t have what it takes to understand complex issues. You may resort to Youtube videos instead; you may just give up. These are not the only options. Sometimes, you just need a bit of help along the way – and not the kind that ChatGPT pretends to offer.
Or…did you always say to yourself “well, if only I had time, I’d study XYZ for a degree” and now think it’s too late? Perhaps there are topics and issues you would like to learn more about, but do not have the time, money, or desire to commit to an academic qualification?
There’s no need. I provide supportive, confidential 1-on-1 or small group mentoring and guidance, both through questions and conversations in general philosophy and theory (for instance: what is free will?) and on specific dilemmas and topics (for instance: what should I read if I want to understand more about trans rights debate? What do I need to know about global political economy in order to figure out the most sustainable way to live within my current circumstances? What is the right, just, or ethically and morally preferable way of acting in this situation?)
The tempo, length, and scope of mentorship will be adjusted to your needs. This means there is no minimum obligation – you can come to as many or as few sessions as you wish. I have no preference for any specific resources, publisher, or platform, and thus the choice of readings and resources will be unbiased, open access, and wide-ranging as possible, within the constraints of your interests, curiosity, and tempo.
Sessions are available online, and only exceptionally in person. Please get in touch with me to discuss modes of delivery.
I have over 25 years of experience in teaching and supporting both young and older adults in learning about the society, other people, ethics, and politics. I have tutored students at Cambridge, led science programmes for gifted children, and led reading and discussion groups for adults from all walks of life exploring the vast plethora of questions that modern life throws at us. For two years, I have served as Contributing Editor at The Philosopher, UK’s longest-running public philosophy journal, which excels at publishing accessible but engaging texts on a wide variety of philosophical, sociological, and theoretical topics, and have written extensively for non-academic audiences. I also have a teaching qualification (Fellowship of the UK’s Higher Education Academy), but mentoring is more of a conversation than what some people think of as education in the traditional sense. The majority of the work and initiative will be yours; the only limit is your curiosity, time, and willingness to invest in exploring specific topics.
And, of course, there is no marking or grading – ever.
